The Advantages and Disadvantages of Various Screens
Q. What type of screens can you paint on?
A. There are commonly three types of screens that can be painted on:
- Metal Screen
- Fiberglass Screen
- Vinyl Screen (Recommended)
Metal screens are used for many kinds of spaces; Windows & doors were mainly offered over a hundred and fifty years ago and still in use today. Painting on a metal screen is easy and comes in a variety of qualities. You can purchase this material in most hardware/depot stores. Paints will easily bleed through to the other side while painting, but that’s okay. Installation in windows or doors is relatively easy. Metal can be manipulated to create a dimensional finish which is very cool! The cons are when a whole or rip occurs, it’s there for good.
Fiberglass screens are the staple in new home construction wherever there are screens in a window or sliding door entrances to patios and porches. Also used as a desirable screen painting surface. Qualities vary, but most follow into low to mid-grade quality and don’t last very long if there in there respectable locations, especially in the elements. Cons; A rip, whole or tear cannot be repaired.
Vinyl screen is king! This type of screen is usually referred to as “Superscreen” for a reason. It’s tear resistant strands are woven where each vinyl strand is comprised of very thin fiberglass filaments. Because it’s woven, it’s incredibly strong. If you poke a hole through the screen with a pencil, for example, you can move your finger over the area and the weave will appear in it’s original state. The only way you can cut this material is with a knife, razor or scissors.
So this is why I paint on superscreen! It’s durable, long lasting, (years), easy to install and keep clean!
You can even power wash my screens!
If I brought my screens to you, could you mount the painted screen into the frame after removing the regular screen?
